Okinawa 2008 day 5

January 29, 2009 · Leave a Comment

We spent a day at Naha City.  First of all a light brunch at a small noodles restaurant near the hotel:-

We then go to a famous indoor market at Naha City,

We also have our late lunch there, with sashimi and lobster soup…it is not as freshy as I thought though….

Then a short trip to the only shopping outlet in Okinawa.  Well you can see how “interesting” and “attractive” this outlet is…

Dinner time, we follow some local guide book and go to this little shop.  I can say they serve the best ribs in the world.  Have you tried taking a ribs with chopsticks?  It’s mouth droppingly delicious!

See the little napkin with chinese writings?  They cannot speak english so we communicate by chinese characters!

Look at that, see how soft it is!!!

We then go back to our hotel after such a delicious dinner.  By the way, have a look the high tech parking slot machine!

That’s it for Day 5.  See the rest of my photos here: http://www.fotop.net/tamwaikay/okinawa08day5

Hong Kong Flower Show 2008

January 28, 2009 · 2 Comments

A few reviews to my first trial at the Flower Show 2008.  It’s very difficult to get a good composition and you can never imgine how crowded it is, even though I go there on 17 Mar which is a weekday!

Not sure whether I should go again this year…

Canon’s Customer Service

January 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I have bought myself a 2nd hand film camera from the State when I was there in December 08.  It is the EOS Elan 7E which is also called the EOS 30 in Hong Kong.

I have been looking for a battery grip for it since I’ve back to Hong Kong, partly because it gives me an extra shutter button when I hold the camera vertically (you will know how important that button is when you shoot a lot of vertical photos like me), partly because it let me run the camera with AA batteries, and partly because it gives the camera a much more pro outlook.

Bad luck, have been searching through the web and many 2nd hand shops and still couldn’t find one.  Someone from dcfever.com is selling it together with the camera at $1,000.00.  I offered $250 for the grip only and I hear nothing from him since then (my offer is not unreasonably low isn’t it?  I mean, how can the grip costs 1/3 of the camera’s selling price?)

Eventually I sought help from Canon.  I left them an E-mail, saying that I am looking for a BP-300, which has been discontinued since 2006.  The next day a lady called me that it’s out of stock.  And then the next next day another lady called me saying that they have found the very last one in their warehouse and I can get it for $610.  All the conversations were conducted in a very friendly and timely manner, no bull shit or rought language used at all (see, I am asking them to find a film products when everyone else is shooting digital and that product itself is discontinued 3 years ago.  I would not be surprised if my request is being ignored).  I am pleased with that.

Yes it may be not worthwhile to buy a brand new battery grip for $610 when my camera only costs me $149 in US.  However, this is the funny thing about buying discontinued photography equipment, you can always increase your luck in locating one by paying more.  I do not mind to spend more on a battery grip at all, because the money I save for using AA batteries instead of those stupid CR@#654$@54654#!@%@#  camera batteries will soon compensate the higher price I pay.

Plus, I do not have to pray and wait for a reply from the seller from dcfever.  Thanks Canon for such a wonderful service!

Happy photography everyone!

Doing the same thing I have done 2 years ago…

January 13, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I attended a conference which I have actually done 2 years ago.  My capacity has changed, of course, since my last attendance.  I was also attending with a completely different attitude and intention this time.  I prepared, took half day off to pull up myself, attended the venue 30 minutes earlier, and studied as much as possible.

Yet I believe I may going to fail this time, again.

I just can’t figure out the organization, which one is responsible for which type of works, and what particular works one specific department focus on.  I tried to read it but I just couldn’t remember it.  And even if I could remember, I would not know specifically what type of works that section does!  It’s completely out of my expectation to being asked with these kinds of stuff.

I didn’t feel sad for my failure last time.  But this time it’s different.  I did wanna to be selected.  I did at least want to have a second chance.  If I could have better prepared, if I could have performed better.

I also hope my last question didn’t make everything even worse.

I just hate to act like a stupid or an idiot knowing nothing what’s going on in the conference.  I didn’t have this feeling 2 years ago even though I believe I performed even worse than saying nothing.  But this time it’s completely different and I feel so sad about it.

Well it’s gone.  All I can do is having my finger crossed and hope for miracles to happen…

Record breaking lunch

January 12, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Given the cold weather these days, I decided to take a little bit more food for lunch today.

After dropping 2 rolls of films at Colour Six, I walked straight forward at Stanley Streed to 威記粥店 and had the followings:-

I didn’t expect that I could finish them all.  But I did, in just less than 30 mins while I was reading Ming Pao News online.

Don’t underestimate the power of cold weather!!

January 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

2.

WASHINGTON — In March 2005, a low-key Princeton economist who had become a Federal Reserve governor coined a novel theory to explain the growing tendency of Americans to borrow from foreigners, particularly the Chinese, to finance their heavy spending.

The problem, he said, was not that Americans spend too much, but that foreigners save too much. The Chinese have piled up so much excess savings that they lend money to the United States at low rates, underwriting American consumption.

December 31, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Eventually she was unable to fight against the cancer and had left us on 17th December 2008, hopefully in peace, in Canada.

17 December 2008  must be a very cold and cloudy day in Canada.  As I belive the God will show the world its sadness even if it refuses to save the life of such a lovely and kind lady.

At least she can finally meet her husband somewhere in heaven.  I still remember the way she show us the photos with her husband.  You can actually SEE love from her eyes.  I truely wish they can live happily thereafter together in heaven.

What a sad news that marked the end of 2008.  What a ridiculous world that continue the praising of killers and punishing the innocence.

2008 was such a fantastic year.  We enjoyed the best of our time as well as the worst of the time.  Who can benefit the most?  Obviously are those working in the media.  I doubt which correspondent would unable to find anything to write in 2008.

Happy 2009 everyone!

Playing too well = cheating?

December 23, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I must confess that if I want to memorize something, I can remember it in great details and for long time. why people can’t just accept that there are people who have great memories? Why on earth will they think that people blessed with great memory when showing off their skill must be cheating?

I may have done a little bit too well in the Christmas party, partly because our table had the easiest question and partly because I am familiar with the topic but THERE IS NO CHEATING.

At the end it was just a game for supermaket coup-ons which I do not really care about. I dare not to trade off my integrity for coupons.

Instead of questioning whether I was cheating, why don’t you accept that you are so lucky to have hired someone with brilliant memory and IS WILLING TO WORK FOR YOU EVEN FOR SUCH A LOW PAY!!

Anyway it was such a minor incident which I will not waste my memory for.  Should put this away after writing it down and look foward to the exciting Christmas Holidays!

A phone without a memory card is just a phone!?

December 22, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I alway pay attention to the ads in MTR, as I always find them very creative, and sometimes too creative.

Yesterday I was exiting from the Admiralty MRT station to the taxi stand, and I found this ad from Sandisk in Chinese:-

” A Phone without a 16G mini SD card…
will only become….
A phone…”

Weird enough, I find this statement very true, and I don’t see why I need a memory card to “transform” my phone into something else!! Since when are we looking for something that we are not actually looking for? A phone SHOULD BE a phone and nothing else. I wonder why people want a phone, and, apart from a phone, a camera, video recorder, mp3 player, movie player, internet browser, torch, remote controller, e-mail account, MSN player, and the latest, online banking machine!!!

The mobile phones these days are just terrific! See, when you buy yourself a phone, you are actually buying a whole bunch of the above stuffs! Great!

But wait, what if I ONLY want a phone?…..err… sorry, there is no such thing called “a mobile phone” now…I find it extremely hard to buy a new mobile phone for myself nowadays, and that’s why I keep praying everyday that my phone will not stop functioning, as I will then no longer be able to get another phone…

I am not a colleague of 007 and I am not a CIA agent neither.  I do not want my leather shoes to be my hair dryer like Stephen Chow in one of his movies.  When I want something, I really want to get that thing, but not something else.  I tihnk there is a specific purpose for every product in this world.

No offence to those who are using the brilliant iphone, as I thinkg iphone is an accessories for showing off, and as a bonus, it also gives you the function of a phone….

thanks god, my mobile phone doesn’t have a sandisk memory card……
